Saving Money on the Bridal Shower

Who doesn't just love being "showered" with gifts and well wishes?  There are many fun types of bridal showers.  The most popular is probably the traditional shower with a lingerie shower coming in a close second.    What type of shower you have will depend a lot on your stage of life and what your household needs are as well.

Here are a few of the more popular types of showers:
1. Traditional:
The traditional shower is usually held during the early afternoon on a weekend.

It features light hors d'ouevres like a fruit tray, cheese and crackers, and mints served with some type of punch that almost always contains sherbet. The gifts given are typically household items like towels, potholders, baking pans, etc.  Most of the time this type of shower seems formal, but given an outgoing hostess they can be spiced up with games.

2. Lingerie
If you are blessed enough to live in a community / circle of friends that is going to give you more than one shower, a lingerie shower is a must!  What other time in your life are you going to get an abundance of goodies to sleep in and/or romp around in?  The drawback to a lingerie shower is that you won't want to invite people you don't know very well (like co-workers) as buying something so personal may make them and you uncomfortable.

Sometimes even people you know well may decline if they tend to be extremely shy or have prudish tendencies.  Lingerie showers are more upbeat than traditional ones but with the same basic foods.  Depending on the age of the attendees, I've seen lingerie showers that were held in the evening with alcoholic beverages.

3. Couples Shower
Couples showers have become increasingly popular during the last ten years.  Couples showers often turn into fantastic parties that go late into the evening with the groom feeling as if he is not left out of the celebration.  The gifts are usually items off of the registry but sometimes go a little more risqué as guys like to give gifts that might make a girl blush.  Another thing I've noticed gaining popularity is for 2 or 3 couples to host a couples” shower together and share the cost and labor of providing the food and beverage.

Want to spice up your shower?  There are many hokey bridal shower games for sale that will do if you don't have time to be creative.  The best idea I've seen is to have the group complete a madlib for the couple. It can be totally custom with a basic storyline of how/where the couple met, what she thought when she met him, what he thought when he met her, and their plans for the future.  Just leave blanks with instructions for whether the blank needs a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb.  Have the attendees provide you with random nouns, verbs, etc as needed to complete the madlib without letting the guests actually know the storyline.  Then ceremoniously read the story about how they met.  Unless you are working with a group of deadbeats, it is sure to bring laughter.
